Dear Parents,

An exciting welcome to all of you for the 2009 – 2010 school year at St. Joseph Catholic School.  Our present enrollment is 174 students and 109 families.

As most of you know we were involved this summer in the building of two new classrooms.  Due to some circumstances construction did not get started until the week after July 4th.  They did a fantastic job in getting them ready for school.

After we received the word from the city inspector on August 18th, word was sent out via email that help was needed to start moving furniture that was stored in other classrooms to different classrooms.  Then on August 19th those individuals came back to help move furniture into the new classrooms as well as put up new white boards, bulletin boards, etc.  I thank all the parents and grandparents who turned out to help.  They came bearing gifts of drills, bits, extension cords, allen wrenches, ladders, transportation to get more equipment, screwdrivers, muscles, ideas, and teamwork. It couldn’t have happened without the help of these volunteers.  I can’t thank you enough for all you did.

The other exciting time was watching the students enter their new classrooms.  We still have little touch ups to do, but that is to be expected.

Our official ribbon cutting ceremony will be on September 23rd.  We will have Mass at 9:30 followed by the ribbon cutting and reception.  We will have Hugo Monsanto, architect, Msgr. Milam Joseph from the diocese, Ed Schaffler, Chuck Kobdish and Dave Rosenberg from the Catholic Foundation from whom we received the $70,000 grant for the new classrooms, Sister Gloria, Superintendent, Sister Dawn, assistant Superintendent, School Advisory Council, the Ad Hoc Committee, and as many of you and the parishioners who can come.  Mark your calendars!

We have several families who have not yet turned in signature pages from the Handbook, and/or emergency care forms.  Please do so now.

The deadline for the new spirit shirt, “Zealous for Catholic Education” is this Friday.  Throughout the year different days will be designated as spirit days when they will wear these shirts.  They are the shirts the faculty had on during the open house on Sunday, August 16th

The Oktoberfest is well on its way.  The chairpersons, Beverly Lincks, Cathy Workman, and Tom Bugg have done an outstanding job in getting help and achieving so much thus far.  Our room parents have also been busy during the summer getting their class baskets ready.  We are way ahead thus far.  This is a great total Waxahachie endeavor, so all hands need to be on deck. J

Don’t forget to check folders which come home on Tuesdays.  Lots of information goes out to you via the folders.  Be sure to read them.

Always remember to try to pray as a family.

Ms. Volker

OKTOBERFEST

Oktoberfest is around the corner. For those of you that haven't experienced it, you are in for a treat. Not only is Oktoberfest a fun day for your family, it's also an extremely successful fundraiser for our school. The event usually attracts about 7,000 people looking for great food, entertainment, games, prizes, plus live and silent auctions. Tell your family and friends to join us: they will not be disappointed.

This week will be busy as we begin selling raffle tickets and getting volunteers organized for game booths and other activities surrounding Oktoberfest. Please watch for news from your room coordinator and the Oktoberfest Committee regarding what time you and your family will be working at Oktoberfest.

Work is ongoing as the Oktoberfest Committee organizes for the big event. If you are willing to help in the weeks leading up to September 18 and 19, please contact Cathy Workman 469-766-4153, Tom Bugg  214-949-9457, or Beverly Lincks  972-816-9583. This is a huge event and requires many, many people working together, and this is a great way to get those volunteer hours.

Raffle tickets will come home to each family this week. Please get out and sell those tickets! The prizes are great, and they are very easy to sell. Prizes will be awarded to the families that sell the most tickets as well as to the grade that sells the most tickets, so get out and get busy. More tickets are available! Please continue to get more tickets as you sell out.

Request - If you have any pictures of last years silent auction baskets and or teacher projects please send pictures to Beverly Lincks @ blincks@crowholdings.com.  Beverly would like them for the Oktoberfest website to give the lookers a chance to see what has been on our silent auctions in the past.
